Armenia: an ancient land of healers

Few countries carry medicine as deep in their story as Armenia. In the 12th century, the physician Mkhitar Heratsi, often called the father of Armenian medicine, wrote Relief of Fevers, an encyclopedic work that covered surgery, diet and even care of the mind. Three centuries later, Amirdovlat of Amasia catalogued more than 3,000 plants and their medicinal uses, and wrote in the everyday Armenian of his time so that ordinary people, not only scholars, could read it. One of his manuscripts is still kept at the Matenadaran, Yerevan's ancient-manuscript library.

That spirit of knowledge shared generously is still alive today.

Medical education and doctors

Modern medical training in Armenia began in 1920, when the government approved the law creating a Faculty of Medicine. A century later, that faculty is Yerevan State Medical University, which carries Mkhitar Heratsi's name. It is a place where Armenia's doctors are formed and where the world comes to learn. In the 2024–2025 academic year the university reported more than 1,100 international students, mainly from India, Sri Lanka, Jordan and Iran, taught in English, Armenian and Russian. The university also runs a dedicated Center of Excellence in Dental Education.

Armenia today has about 3.4 physicians for every 1,000 people (World Bank, 2022), up from about 2.9 in 2016.

Modern hospitals and technology

Today, Yerevan's medical map includes large multidisciplinary centers such as Izmirlian Medical Center, Nairi Medical Center and Astghik Medical Center, alongside many specialised private clinics. Medicine here is going digital too. ArMed, Armenia's national digital health system, has been used nationwide since 2017 to connect clinical records across the health system.

The country's technology sector gives this progress its energy. Armenia is home to globally known companies such as Picsart. In July 2026, Slavmed Medical Center in Yerevan carried out Armenia's first remote robotic surgery: a surgeon in Belgium, more than 3,300 km away, operated on a patient in Yerevan.

Why visitors from abroad choose Armenia

  • Easy to reach. Direct flights connect Yerevan with Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt, Beirut, Aleppo, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Cairo and many more cities.
  • Easy to enter. Citizens of the EU, the UK, the USA, the UAE, Qatar and other countries can visit without a visa for up to 180 days a year. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman, and residents of the Gulf, the EU and the USA, are currently exempt under a temporary programme extended to July 2027. Many others can apply online for an e-visa.
  • Safe and welcoming. On Numbeo's crowd-sourced index, Yerevan ranks among the safest cities in the world. Armenia welcomed more than 2.2 million foreign visitors in 2025.
  • You can be understood. Russian is widely spoken and more people learn English every year. Armenia is a member of La Francophonie and hosted its summit in 2018. Thousands of Arabic-speaking Syrian Armenians have made Armenia their home since 2011.

Dental and medical tourism

Patients from abroad come to Armenia for dentistry, fertility treatment (IVF), cosmetic and plastic surgery, hair transplants, cardiology and more. Many are drawn by high standards of care and shorter waiting times, often at a lower cost than in Western Europe or North America, according to international medical-travel guides. Many combine their care with a journey through one of the world's oldest cultures: ancient monasteries, mountain landscapes, Armenian food and the warmth of Armenian hospitality. Leading hospitals have dedicated international patient services. Nairi Medical Center alone reports receiving more than 5,000 foreign patients each year.

Every patient's needs are different. That is why choosing the right specialist, with clear information, matters most.

How we verify

Before a page goes live, our team checks the provider’s documents. We verify by documents only.

  1. Clinics, hospitals, medical centres and pharmacies: we check their activity licence number in Armenia’s official public Unified Electronic Register of Licences (e-license.am).
  2. Doctors: they upload an identity document, their medical diploma and their specialty certificate (and their personal licence, if they have one).
  3. Government documents with a QR code are checked on the official service verify.e-gov.am.
  4. The provider confirms that all information and documents are true and valid, and that they alone are responsible for them and for their medical services.
  5. We keep a secure record of each check (the documents, the date and who checked) and check again when a document expires or details change.

The badge means the documents were checked. It is not a rating or a recommendation and does not assess medical quality.
